Skandagiri also known as Kalavara Durga is a hill near Chikkabalapur town. It is in close proximity to Bangalore.
The peak is said to be at an altitude of 1350metres.
The Skandagiri trek is considered among the easy grade treks and can be negotiated in 3-4 hours depending on your hiking skills. The starting trek point has Papagni mutt (Temple) which is supposed to be among the oldest ones in Karnataka which houses idols of Goddess Parvati.

Skandagiri Trek Itinerary
Skandagiri is ideal for a weekend trek to all Bangaloreans. This trek can be done either as a Night trek or Day Trek.
Skandagiri nightÂ trek best known for its view of the ocean like cloud sand sunrise. After enjoying the beautiful sunrise you can comedown totally rejuvenated. Coming down will take probably half the time as you take to trek up. As there is no shelter on top you will have to avoid the night treks during monsoon.
You can reach the base by about 10 Pm & hope to reach the top by 2 Am. Trekking in the night is much more comfortable as it is cooler and perspiration levels are much lower.
After taking a few hours of rest you can wake up for a beautiful sunrise.
From 2014 night trek was stopped by forest department, You can check with the forest department before starting.
Skandagiri during the day is also a GREAT trek if you are looking at one day trek. Its good to go between post July to mid Feb. This is a great start for aspiring hikers & beginners. This trek offers amazing views & experiences.
Adavantage of staring any day trek early will be avoiding the sunrise. Ideally you should start from Bangalore by 6 Am & try to reach the base by maximum 8 AM.
Find a safe parking place, Ideally its best to park it with someone who charges you to take care of your vehicle, trust us its worth it. This place is known for stealing. Once you park your vehicle reach the Papagni mutt and take the immediate left and walk for 100 meters on the plain path before you hit the mud track. As you keep walking further you will find a rock with the writing â€œTo Hillsâ€- â€œBethakke Dariâ€. Do not forget to turn left from planes into a very narrow path towards theÂ hills.
During the entire trail you will find arrow marks pointing you towards the direction to the top. Stay on course unless you are ready for some untoward adventure.
Assuming that you start hiking by 8 Am you expect to reach by 12 Noon which is considerably hotter. Assuming that you take 3 hours to do the trek in the night, Â the same trek takes 4 hours in the day owing to sun and heat.
After spending an hour at the top you can return to base by 3pm to 4 pm. Expect to be back in Bangalore by 7pm.
Water Availability â€“ Suggest you carry your own water, 2 liter per person. There are small vendors (only on weekend) who sell a litre of water for Rs.30 on top.
